CHENNAI: Six people who stole 2,000 books and 75 ceiling fans from Bharathi Arts College in Vallalar Nagar were arrested on Thursday, a year after the college authorities filed a police complaint.
The government women's college near Stanley hospital was handed over to the health department last year to be converted into a corona ward. College authorities, while checking the stock, found out that 75 ceiling fans and more than 2,000 books had been stolen from the college premises. Subsequently, they filed a police complaint at the Muthialpet police station.
The college authorities also approached state minister PK Sekar Babu and sought his help to resolve the issue.
Following the minister's intervention, cops swung into action and apprehended six suspects Vinoth Kumar, Veeramani, Deepan, Venkatesan, Babu and Suri. They were arrested with the help of CCTV footage. Inquiries revealed that they sold the stolen valuables to two traders Baskar and Ramarajan. All six have been remanded in judicial custody.
