GUWAHATI/DIBRUGAH: Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said 19-year-old jailed college student Barshashree Buragohain, who was arrested on charges of sedition, will be given a chance to appear in examinations. Almost simultaneously, a local court in Golaghat on Thursday asked Golaghat Central Jail authorities to make arrangements to bring her to the exam centre under security cover.
Barshasreee, a student of Mathematics at DCB College, Jorhat, has been languishing in jail for the last 58 days. She is slated to appear in her second-semester examination from July 18.
Barshashree was arrested on May 18 from Uriamghat in Golaghat district and was charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967 allegedly after writing a poem titled “Akou Korim Rashtra Droh” (will again rebel against the nation).
Speaking to the media, Sarma said Barshashree had to be arrested as keeping her free became a risky affair.
“Had the girl not been arrested, she would have surely joined the Ulfa. Today morning also, I sent people to the jail to talk to her. Once her parents and the girl take responsibility that she will not go to Ulfa, Barshashree will be released,” he added. Sarma said after joining the proscribed outfit, she will return as a “human bomb” and become a threat to society. “How can we allow a girl to join Ulfa (I) after knowing her intention. If Ulfa sends her with an AK-47, what will happen?” he asked.
