Ranchi: The ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) on Thursday announced its support for NDA’s presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu in the 16th presidential election scheduled on July 18. JMM chief Shibu Soren, who was authorised by the central committee of the party to decide the matter on June 25, issued a letter addressed to all MPs and MLAs of the party to support Murmu’s candidature.
Soon after the official declaration of support by JMM, Murmu called up Guruji (Shibu Soren) to express her gratitude.
In his letter, the senior Soren said, “You all are aware that Droupadi Murmu, the former governor of Jharkhand, who is also a tribal woman, is a candidate in the forthcoming presidential election. For the first time since Independence, any tribal woman would get the honour of being elected president of the country. After due consideration, the party has decided to vote in favour of Droupadi Murmu.”
The decision was welcomed by JMM lawmakers and BJP as well. State president of BJP and MP Deepak Prakash congratulated JMM for its decision to support a tribal candidate fielded by the NDA. “Murmu had visited Jharkhand after being fielded by the NDA. She met the JMM leaders here. It was the first time that someone from the 12-crore-strong tribal community has been nominated for the presidential post and the JMM’s decision to support her is a welcome step,” he said.
