Panaji: It was not a good day for Goa institutes when the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2022 results were announced by the Union education ministry on Friday.
Goa University, which had featured in the top 100 universities in the country at the 96th rank last year, found itself in the 101-150 bracket in 2022.
Goa College of Pharmacy was the only institute in the state which improved its rank by one spot, landing at the 55th position this year.
Three of the general stream colleges which made it to the NIRF list last year in the 101-150 and 151-200 brackets also did not feature this year. This, despite the fact that 20 general stream colleges had made their submissions and only two gained NIRF ranks.
Ponda Education Society's (PES) College of Arts & Science, Farmagudi, featured in the 101-150 bracket in the college category, and Dhempe College of Arts & Science, Miramar, found itself in the 151-200 bracket. Both managed to retain their spots.
GU officials said on Friday that they are still trying to verify the varsity’s exact position in NIRF-2022 with the ministry.
Goa’s lone and state-run university’s best rank at NIRF was 68th in 2018. It was ranked 93rd in 2019, improved its position to 81st in 2020, and slid to 96th in 2021, as more and more institutes enter the NIRF race every year.
This year, however, GU is the only state institute to have made it to the 151-200 band in the overall category of NIRF.
National Institute of Technology (NIT), Goa, saw its rank drop by three positions, but continued to be ranked 88th, among the 100 best colleges in the country in the engineering category. It is only the second NIT among the new ones to feature within the first 100 in the category.
“We have done amazingly well while the institute is still functioning from its temporary campus,” said institute director Gopal Mugeraya.
At the 36th spot, Sanquelim-based Goa Institute of Management also made it to the list of 100 best B-schools in the country. The institute was ranked 35th last year and managed to roughly retain its spot in the list.
Institutes entering the NIRF competition are gauged broadly on the parameters of teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.
