BOM app makes rain forecasts more understandable

The BOM Weather app has been updated to make rainfall forecasts easier to understand.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the app is used by millions of Australians, and the daily rainfall forecast is one of the most viewed parts of the Bureau's forecasts.

But is seems this information is often misinterpreted.

So the app has been changed to show "Rain today" when rain is expected, along with the predicted range in millimetres, eg "4–10mm", plus the chances of those amounts occurring, eg "75% (high) change of at least 4mm, 50% (medium) chance of at least 6mm, 25% (low) chance of at least 10mm".

When rainfall is unlikely, it will simply display 'No rain'.

The Bureau believes this will equip all Australians, including farmers, event planners and tourism operators, with the rainfall information they need to make informed decisions.

"With millions of Australians relying on the Bureau's rainfall forecasts to make informed decisions, this change will mean customers can be confident in their understanding of the amount of rain expected in their location," the Bureau stated, adding that it keeps looking for ways to improve the way information is presented, and welcomes feedback from users through the app.

BOM Weather is available for Android and iOS.
