GORAKHPUR: If eastern UP's folklore prescribes mud bath for pleasing the rain god, Indra, a group of women in Maharajganj applied the medicine on two local representatives -- the MLA and the Nagar Palika chairman. The inherent belief here was that the medicine gets more effective if the bath is administered on the head of the town.
The two gentlemen, too, sportingly joined the rituals so that the rain god showered his blessings on the eastern part of the state, which has seen a dry monsoon so far, even as the women drenched them with mud while singing in chorus.
While children have been taking the mud bath in the past in case of drought, this time after the prolonged dry spell, the women of Pipardeura area in Maharajganj thought of involving people's representatives in rituals.
