CBI probe sought into PSI exam scam

Dharwad: Hundreds of competitive exam aspirants, under the banner of Janajagruthi Sangha, staged a demonstration in front of the DC’s office here on Wednesday demanding a CBI probe into the PSI recruitment scam. The protesters later submitted a memorandum addressed to the government through the DC’s office. The protesters said they suspected a nexus between high-level officials and coaching centres in the recruitment of police sub-inspectors. Moreover, there are allegations of a similar scam in the recruitment of SDA, and therefore a detailed probe should be ordered and stern action should be initiated against the culprits, they said. Janajagruti Sangha president Basavaraj Korawar said scams in recruitment have taken place even during Siddaramaiah’s tenure as the chief minister in 2016, and that also should be probed by CBI , he demanded. Without delaying further, the government should notify the PSI re-examination dates before July 31, he said.
SWR revises train departure timings
Hubballi: South Western Railway has revised the departure time of the train number 17303 SSS Hubballi–Karatagi Daily Express on July 17. It will depart from SSS Hubballi Station at 6pm (instead of scheduled departure of 5.20pm) to facilitate students attending National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) here. SWR has also decided to extend the services of train No. 07377/ 07378 Vijayapura-Mangaluru Jn-Vijaypura Daily Express Special. Accordingly, train No. 07377 Vijayapura-Mangaluru Jn Daily Express Special, which was earlier notified to run up to July 31, will be further run till September 30. The service of train No. 07378 Mangaluru Jn-Vijayapura Daily Express Special, which was earlier notified to run up to August 1, will run till October 1. There will be no change in timings, stoppages, coach composition and the days of service of the above trains.
CAs’ conference on July 15 and 16
Hubballi: The 35th annual conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) will be held in the city on July 15 and 16. The theme of the conference will be ‘Uttharan’, said Sheshgiri Kulkarni, chairman of the conference committee. He told reporters here on Wednesday that Aniket Sunil Talati, vice-president ICAI (New Delhi) will inaugurate the conference on July 15. “Government’s expectations is increasing on auditors’ work skills. The meet is aimed at increasing the morale and self-confidence of auditors. More than 300 people from Hubballi, Dharwad, Haveri, Sirsi, Belagavi, and Ballari will participate,” he said. Shridhara Muppala, Central Council member, will speak on ethical challenges while Shripriya Kumar from Chennai will speak on challenges in corporate attest function.
Prof B D Kumar takes charge as D’gere varsisty VC
Davanagere: Prof Basavanthappa Doddamallappa Kumbar (prof B D Kumar) took charge as the new VC of Davanagere University on Monday. The VC’s post had fallen vacant after the term of former VC prof Sharanappa V Halase ended some six months ago. Prof Kumbar is a retired professor in library and information sciences department of Karnatak University (Dharwad). He has been appointed by the government as the Davanagere University VC for a period of four years. Prof K Shivashankar from the MBA PG department at VTU (Belagavi) has been appointed as the registrar (evaluation) in place of prof H S Anitha, who has been sent back to her parent department at Davanagere University.
Congress workers protest ‘shoddy road works’ in Dharwad
Dharwad: Congress workers staged a demonstration near Murugha Mutt here on Wednesday to protest against the bad shape of roads in the locality. They alleged that the shoddy work on roads has been exposed by incessant rain that lashed this week. The workers said the under-construction TendureSure Road (from Old DySP Circle till Murugha Mutt) has exposed the shoddy work. Potholes have appeared on TenderSure Road, they said, adding to get grants from the government, a rosy picture on the road was shown. “But poor implementation of work had caused miseries for locals. Now, the rain has exposed poor-quality works,” they said, and demanded action against the contractor concerned.
AAP workers decry ‘corruption’ in Smart City works in Belagavi
Belagavi: The workers of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by North Karnataka in charge Rajeev Topannavar, gheraoed the Belagavi Smart City Ltd (BSCL) office on Wednesday. Besides alleging huge corruption in the construction works of the central bus terminus and Kalamandir, they accused BSCL of employing contract-based workers who are unfit for the work. “Poor-quality road works have resulted in mishaps,” they said, and charged a contractor with bagging a tender by giving fake documents. They also demanded action against the contractor. Works to the tune of Rs 600 crore have been spent on roads and underground drainage, and these are of poor quality, thanks to corruption, they alleged. Shankar Hegade, Shivanand Kaari, Gangadhar Hubbellappannavar, and other APP workers were present.
