Pune News Highlights, July 15, 2022: Even on Thursday, rainfall intensity dropped with light rains reported across Pune city. The 12-hour rainfall recorded till 8.30 pm over city locations were – Chinchwad (37mm), Lohegaon (11.6mm), Lavale (15mm), Shivajinagar (10.4mm) and Magarpatta (5mm).

Pune News, Latest Pune News Headlines & Highlights: The India Meteorological Department said that an orange alert will remain in Pune district on Friday even as heavy rain continued to batter Maharashtra for the fourth straight day, leaving both hill stations and plains flooded.

Even on Thursday, rainfall intensity dropped with light rains reported across Pune city. The 12-hour rainfall recorded till 8.30 pm over city locations were – Chinchwad (37mm), Lohegaon (11.6mm), Lavale (15mm), Shivajinagar (10.4mm) and Magarpatta (5mm).

Earlier in the day, many areas in Maharashtra were among the country’s wettest areas, with Shirgaon recording 312 mm of rainfall, Vaitarna dam 252 mm, Tamhini 235 mm, Lonavala 218 mm, Mahabaleshwar 150 mm, Koyna 142 mm, Matheran 130 mm, and Mumbai – Santacruz and Dahanu (70mm each), during the past 24 hours.

Youngsters go on rampage on Pune roads

A group of youngsters went on rampage on Pune roads and attacked citizens for no reasons in the crowded mid city areas of Kelkar Road and Tilak Road, one after the other, on Friday afternoon. One of the miscreants also bit a cop on duty, when he tried to stop them. Along with the policeman, a few citizens were also injured in the incident. A video of the youths beating people on a street went viral on social media.

Pune: Applications open for teacher training workshop on climate education

Teachers in Pune can enrol for a two-day workshop on climate change education designed in tune with the National Education Policy (NEP).

The workshop titled ‘Digital Pedagogy and Climate Change Education for all disciplines’ is being jointly organised by Improving Climate Studies and Understanding (TROP ICSU) and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune. Maharashtra records 2,371 fresh coronavirus cases, 10 deaths

Maharashtra on Friday recorded 2,371 new coronavirus cases and 10 more deaths linked to the infection, the state health department said.

With these additions, the state's overall COVID-19 tally rose to 80,14,823, while the toll increased to 1,48,015, the department said in a bulletin.

Pune city and Satara district recorded two coronavirus-linked fatalities each, while municipal corporations of Thane, Navi Mumbai, Nashik, and Solapur district registered one death each, said the bulletin.(PTI)

Jewellery firm gifts soldiers 'commitment rings' to mark 75th year of independence

Pune-based jewellery firm Bonisa has launched 'EkIndia Mission' to gift soldiers 'commitment rings' made of silver, gold, diamond and soil from different states.

The ring will be gifted to 7,500 soldiers this year to mark India's 75th year of independence 'Bharat ka Amrit Mahotsav', said a release.

As part of the initiative, 88 veteran soldiers at the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre (PRC), Khadki, were given the 'EkIndia Rings' at a ceremony on Thursday.(PTI)

Vitesco Tech inaugurates new plant in Pune

Vitesco Technologies on Friday inaugurated its new plant at Talegaon in Pune with an investment of 30 million euro to cater to growing demand for low-emission technologies for IC engines as well as electrified and all-electric drive systems.

The first series of productions from the new "plant of the future" will be for the two-wheeler market, followed by various powertrain solutions products, the company said in a release.

The plant is spread over 20 acres with over 17.580 sq mt of manufacturing space.(PTI)

Maharashtra: Death toll in rain-related incidents crosses 100-mark

Rain-related incidents have claimed the lives of 102 persons across Maharashtra so far during the ongoing monsoon season, the state disaster management authority said in a report on Friday.

These figures are between June 1 and July 14, it said.

Three of the deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours - one each in Buldhana, Nashik and Nandurbar districts - and two persons were reported missing, it said.(PTI)

Pune: Man gets swept away in water while crossing submerged bridge

A man was swept away Wednesday while walking on a submerged bridge built on the swollen Mutha River in the Shivane area of rain-lashed Pune and another who held on to a lamp post was rescued by fire brigade personnel, said officials. Officials from Uttam Nagar police station said the deceased was identified as Nikhil Kaushik and Ashish Rathod was rescued by the personnel of the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority fire brigade. They added that the incident took place on the bridge connecting Nanded Phata to Shivane. Read More

Heavy rain continues, water storage in Pune dams rises to 14.11 TMC

With Pune district continuing to witness heavy rain, the water storage in all four dams upstream of Mutha river has now increased to 14.11 TMC, despite 1.87 TMC water being released from Khadakwasla dam. The catchment areas of Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar dams upstream of Mutha river are witnessing heavy rainfall. This has led to heavy inflow of water in the dams and the storage has reached 14.11 TMC till Thursday morning.

The Khadakwasla dam, which is the nearest to Pune city, is filled to capacity so water is being discharged from it into the Mutha river and canal since Tuesday. All residents living alongside Mutha river have been asked to be on the alert and shift to safer locations. In the last 24 hours, the Khadakwasla area witnessed 54 mm rain, Panshet 128 mm, Varasgaon 129 mm and Temghar 132 mm rainfall.

The Pune Municipal Corporation has kept all agencies concerned, including police, fire department and health department, on alert for emergency situations. The disaster management cell is also operating round the clock. Maharashtra is under the influence of strong westerly winds blowing from the Arabian Sea. The favourable weather systems are a low-pressure area located over south coastal Odisha, an east-west shear zone, and an active monsoon trough located to the south of its normal position. (ENS)

Pune records 70 mm rainfall in 24 hours, among wettest areas in country

Some parts of Pune city recorded 70 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, the season’s highest so far, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) data showed Thursday morning. Pune district will be under an ‘orange’ alert on Friday even as heavy rain battered Maharashtra for the fourth straight day, leaving hill stations and plains flooded alike.

Water storage in Mutha river dams rises to 12.23 TMC

With Pune district continuing to witness heavy rain, the water storage in the catchment areas of all four dams upstream of Mutha river has now increased to 12.23 TMC as of Wednesday morning. Last year, on the same day, the water storage in the dams was 8.79 TMC. This increase in water storage levels is despite water being released from Khadakwasla dam into the Mutha river. The Khadakwasla dam, which is the closest dam to Pune city upstream of Mutha river, is filled to its capacity, compelling authorities to discharge 11,000 cusecs of water.

Watch: Traffic slow as vehicles wade through waterlogged roads

As rains continue to batter Pune for a third consecutive day, traffic remained slow as waterlogging was seen in most major areas of the city. On Wednesday, large boulders fell onto the Pune-Satara Road near Old Katraj tunnel, partially blocking the lane towards Pune and affecting traffic on the route.

Pune schools to remain shut on Thursday

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced that all schools in the civic jurisdiction will remain shut Thursday in view of heavy rain prediction in the region. Pune has experienced incessant rainfall in the last few days.

PMC Education Officer Popat Kale said, “…all schools including pre-primary, primary, secondary, senior secondary run by civic body, private, aided or unaided will remain closed on July 14.” However, the teaching and non-teaching staff of all civic schools will have to report to their respective schools to participate in disaster management-related work of the PMC.

After heavy rains, boulders fall on Pune-Satara Road, traffic hit

Following heavy rains, large boulders fell onto the Pune-Satara road near Old Katraj tunnel on Wednesday afternoon, partially blocking the lane towards Pune and affecting traffic on the route. A team from the district disaster management authority and fire brigade removed the boulders later in the day.

Several areas in Maharashtra have been witnessing heavy rainfall as the southwest monsoon continues to be vigorous over the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned people against visiting the ghat areas of Pune, Satara, Kolhapur, and Nashik as these remain extremely vulnerable to intense rainfall spells.
