Maharashtra floods: 10 rescued from swollen Vaitarna river in Palghar

A red alert has been issued for Palghar district for Thursday.
MUMBAI: Ten people, including six workers, stuck on a barge in swollen Vaitarna river in Palghar were rescued by a boat early on Thursday morning.

They were engaged in the construction work of the Mumbai-Vadodara national highway project.

The Vaitarna river has neared its danger mark following heavy rainfall in the district. The workers of G M Infrastructure got onto the barge that sailed into the river. As the water level of the river began rising, they called for help.

A National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) team stationed in the district along with local administration, reached the banks of the river to help with the rescue work. A chopper was arranged, but as water receded, they were rescued by a boat.
A red alert has been issued for the district for Thursday.
Rivers like Vaitarna and Pinjal have neared the danger marks.
Three gates of the Dhamani dam on the Surya River in Palghar were opened on Wednesday night to allow overflow of excessive water from the dam.
