COIMBATORE: BJP cadres staged a protest at Pollachi on Wednesday against the state government’s move to draw water from Aliyar dam and supply it to Oddanchathram in Dindigul district.
Members of Coimbatore South District BJP who organised the protest also demanded the DMK government to implement the Anamalayaru–Nallaru project which would increase water supply to Pollachi region.
The protesters led by BJP south district president K Vasantharajan said that the DMK had assured in its pre-poll promises that the long pending Anamalayaru–Nallaru project would be implemented if it comes to power. Constructing dams across rivers Anaimalayaru and Nallaru was part of the agreement signed by Tamil Nadu with Kerala in 1958 under Parambikulam Aliyar project (PAP).
Though rest of the components of the project was completed, the dams across Anamalayaru and Nallaru which would fetch TN an additional 9tmcft of water was not done all these years.
The agitators raised slogans against the DMK government for failing to implement the scheme to augment water supply to Pollachi while showing urgency to go ahead with the project to supply Aliyar water for Oddanchathram drinking water project, which might deprive water to Pollachi.
The BJP men said the government should explore other sources of water for Oddanchathram instead of tapping water from Aliyar.TNN
