Mangaluru: The Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB) has made 75% attendance mandatory from this academic year. The mandatory attendance rule was not strictly followed for the past two years due to the pandemic.
However with things turning normal, the KSEEB has switched back to its earlier rule of 75% attendance to appear for exams. According to KSEEB Act-1966 and Rule 37, 75% attendance is compulsory for those attending the SSLC exam.
According to senior officials, the 75% compulsory attendance rule was relaxed in the academic year 2020-21, and it continued in 2021-22 as the pandemic was still prevalent across the country. “Even after commencement of offline classes in last September, the compulsory attendance rule was not re-implemented. With offline classes starting without any problems from this academic year (2022-23 ) across the state, the compulsory attendance rule has been implemented again. SSLC candidates must have 75% attendance to appear for the board examination scheduled in March or April next year,” a senior official added.
In Dakshina Kannada, the majority of the SSLC students did turn up to school after offline classes commenced in September. Sadananda AD Poonja, BEO, North told TOI that though there was no compulsion on attendance, students attended classes without fail. A small percentage of migrant children did not turn up for many months as their parents had moved to their native places due to Covid. Their parents had no jobs as the job market was not picking up. “Now, they have moved back and SSLC candidates are regular to class,” he said adding that if a student gets below 75% attendance, he /she will not be issued to exam admission ticket and will not be allowed to appear for the examination.
