GURUGRAM: The city’s second material recovery facility (MRF) at Beriwala Bagh in Sector 11 will be inaugurated on Thursday. This facility is spread over one acre of land and contains 18 pits to make compost out of wet waste. It has the capacity to process around 100 to 150 metric tonnes of waste every day.
To start with, the MRF will get waste from ward 19 and ward 20 and the other wards will gradually be covered. “The project aims to engage local ragpickers for waste segregation which can provide livelihood to up to 100 people. This project will encourage waste recycling by segregating the waste into five categories, including plastic, paper, cardboard, glass and metal. As many as 50 vehicles can empty their waste on this MRF. With the addition of a new MRF, there will be a significant reduction in the waste that goes to the landfill site and only inert will be sent there from this MRF,” said the spokesperson of Ecogreen, MCG’s solid waste management concessionaire.
The MRF will have a weighbridge to correctly record the amount of waste received at site with a worker keeping track of all movements of vehicles. All activities will be monitored by CCTV.
According to the official, the biodegradable waste will be segregated and will be given away as cattle feed or to the pig farms and the rest will be put into the pits to make compost. Moreover, the non-biodegradable waste will be segregated and the recyclable material recovered out of it will be given to local scrap dealers. The city’s first MRF, which was inaugurated in February this year in Badshahpur, also has the capacity to process 150 tonnes of waste every day.
