As the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a red alert in Palghar in view of the extremely heavy rainfall in the town, the administration has closed all schools and colleges in the district till tomorrow. The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in Palghar on Wednesday and Thursday, district collector Dr Manik Gursal issued an order in this regard.
All anganwadis, government and private schools, zilla parishad schools, civic schools and ashram schools, colleges, and training institutes, will remain closed tomorrow, July 14, the order said.
Meanwhile, due to heavy rains and flood situation, all schools, colleges and private establishments/offices will remain closed in the Gadchiroli district till July 16. All essential services will continue.
The authorities in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad have declared a holiday for all schools on Thursday.
"As heavy rainfall is predicted by the weather department, a holiday has been declared on Thursday (July 14) for all civic-run, private, aided and non-aided primary, secondary and higher secondary schools in Pune municipal limits," read a release by the municipal corporation's education department.
Incessant rains have lashed Mumbai and its neighbouring areas for the last one week, resulting in flooding in many low-lying areas and traffic snarls on roads. As heavy showers continued to batter the city, the local trains, considered the lifeline of the metropolis, were largely affected on several routes.
Many areas were inundated, affecting the traffic. Incidents like tree uprooting and landslides were also reported in some areas in Maharashtra due to the continuous rains in the state. A landslide happened near old Katraj tunnel on Pune-Satara road amid heavy rains.
Maharashtra has been witnessing heavy rainfall for the past one week, resulting in waterlogging in several areas. Essential services have also been affected in the state owing to the heavy downpour.
Meanwhile, neighbouring state, Gujarat, is also witnessing heavy rainfall. At least 14 people were killed, while over 31,000 were evacuated in the rainy season. Nine deaths were due to drowning. Three national highways in Kutch, Navsari and Dang districts were blocked due to damage caused by rains.
Fifty-one state highways and over 400 panchayat roads have also been damaged, state Disaster Management Minister Rajendra Trivedi said.
