“The girls are losing out on studies,” Prasanth Bhushan said. The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to list appeals challenging the Karnataka High Court decision upholding the Hijab ban in educational institutions in the state for hearing next week.

Bhushan told the bench that the matters were filed in March this year and are yet to be taken up for hearing.

The appeals challenge the March 15 judgement of the high court full bench which dismissed a batch of petitions filed by Muslim girls studying in pre-university colleges in Udupi seeking the right to wear hijabs in classrooms, holding that wearing the hijab is not an essential religious practice in Islam and that freedom of religion under Article 25 of the Constitution is subject to reasonable restrictions.
