Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 1965. His father was a diplomat and mother a schoolteacher. They had been posted to Paris in 1976 and before their return, Afghanistan witnessed a communist coup and Soviet invasion. His family was granted asylum in the United States in 1980 after which they settled in California.
He has a bachelor's degree in biology and a medical degree. He is a qualified doctor and had practised between 1996 and 2004.
He wrote his first novel, The Kite Runner, in 2001 -- it became an instant success. His other two books -- A Thousand Splendid Suns, And the Mountains Echoed -- were also successful. He has sold over 40 million copies across the world.
He lives with his wife in the United States with his two children.
