MYSURU: The Mysuru City Corporation, which is looking at increasing its revenue, is planning to recover water tax dues which has crossed Rs 200 crore.
Mayor Sunanda Palanethra on Tuesday said the civic body will waive the interest accrued on water tax, and it will be implemented from July 15. She said the defaulter has to pay all dues in one instalment to get the interest on dues waived.
She told reporters that a majority of defaulters are waiting for the state government to waive the interest on water tax dues, which has accumulated to Rs 220 crore. Of this, Rs 74 crore is the interest component. There are 1.8 lakh water connection in the city limits. “We have approached the government to waive the interest. But to speed up the process, we are announcing the interest waiver,” she said, adding once the interest is waived, there will not be any other kind of interest imposed.
She, however, clarified that if a consumer defaults again, the interest will be imposed.
MCC commissioner Lakshmikanth Reddy said those households which do not have water meters will have to pay a penalty. According to him, there are 50,000 domestic connections where meters are not working. The MCC is replacing 3,000 meters a month, he added.
