Bhubaneswar: Vigilance officials on Monday arrested an inspector of Umerkote police station in Nabarangapur district for allegedly accepting Rs 20,000 bribe from a man to get relief in a domestic violence case.
Limaraj Pradhan, additional inspector in-charge of the Umerkote police station, was caught with the bribe amount outside the police station around 11.30 pm on Sunday.
“Seeing our personnel, he started running to evade arrest. After a chase for about 500 metres, our personnel caught him. A scuffle ensued between the vigilance staff and the inspector. Our officers overpowered him,” a senior vigilance officer said.
The bribe money was seized from Pradhan. His house was being searched to ascertain whether he had any disproportionate assets.
At least four police officers have landed in the vigilance net in the last few months. On June 1, vigilance sleuths arrested Malaya Kishore Nayak, a sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Hindol in Dhenkanal district, for allegedly accepting Rs 30,000 bribe from a stone quarry owner to allow him to do business smoothly.
Additional superintendent of police (communication) Trinath Mishra was arrested by the vigilance directorate on February 16 for allegedly possessing disproportionate assets to the tune of nearly Rs 9 crore.
