Darjeeling: Attending the oath-taking ceremony of Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA), Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that she wants 'peace' in the hills.

Mamata urged that people of North Bengal to not trust 'opportunists'.

“Darjeeling will be a new city. If there is peace in the hills then the economy will rise. I didn’t come here to grab the hills. I can even talk to the IT sector and would ask them to set up a sector in Darjeeling and from here they can work across the world,” said the Chief Minister.

Mamata also mentioned that the state government had given several crore rupees in the last seven years for the development of the hills.

“The opportunist leaders want to stop the development of the hills and the people of the hills should not give in to such things. Permanent shops are set up for the hawkers. More developments are in the pipeline,” further said Mamata.

Mamata also inaugurated a coffee house and also a self-help group’s food stall. Showing her appreciation for the women’s hard work, she joined them in the preparation of Bengal’s favourite, Puchkas and also fed enthusiastic children the delectable snack.

Political analysts are of the mind that after North Bengal got ‘saffronised’, the TMC supremo is leaving no stones unturned to woo the voters in North Bengal ahead of panchayat election scheduled next year.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said that Mamata Banerjee should clarify whom she is meaning by ‘opportunists’.

“Who does Mamata mean as opportunists? Bimal Gurung or Anit Thapa? Darjeeling will never vote for TMC. Mamata hasn't got votes from the hills since 2014. People over there say that Mamata visits the hills as a tourist,” claimed the Leader of Opposition.
