
Delhi News Highlights (July 12): Light to moderate rainfall is expected in Delhi today, according to the IMD’s weather forecast. The minimum and maximum temperature are likely to settle at 26 degrees and 33 degrees Celsius respectively.
With the Kanwar Yatra beginning on July 14 and a new Delhi Police pilgrim registration system in place, police across the city have been making preparations for the event. The Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory saying they expect about 15-20 lakh pilgrims or kanwariyas, and 1,925 police and 56 cranes had been deployed. Several routes for pilgrims have been specified, and separate dedicated routes will be provided for traffic and pilgrims.
In other news, a Delhi court on Tuesday deferred the bail plea of Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair to July 14 in a case related to a 2018 tweet which allegedly hurt religious sentiments. Public Prosecutor Atul Shrivastava informed the Patiala House Court that another hearing is pending in the Supreme Court in a different matter related to the case against Zubair filed by UP police in Sitapur for hurting religious sentiments through a tweet, in which he called some Hindu seers “hatemongers”.
The anti-defection law and frequent House disruptions will be discussed at a meeting of presiding officers of legislative bodies that will be chaired by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla here on Friday, according to a statement.
The issue of people's participation in legislative bodies and uniformity of rules and procedures in legislatures will also come up for discussion, the statement by the Lok Sabha Secretariat said on Wednesday.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the construction of the 116.65-km Taranga Hill-Ambaji-Abu Road rail line at an estimated cost of Rs 2,798.16 crore, Union Minister Anurag Thakur said Wednesday.
To be built by the Ministry of Railways, the project will link two states and three religious places and will be completed by 2026-27.
The proposed rail line will traverse through the Sirohi district of Rajasthan and Sabarkantha, Banaskantha and Mahesana districts of Gujarat.(PTI)
A 23-year-old man was killed allegedly by a group of locals in northeast Delhi's New Usmanpur area following a heated argument, police said on Wednesday.
The man, with injuries on his head and legs, was found lying unconscious at the gate of a temple in Brahanpuri around 4 pm on Monday. The police rushed the man, Ashu, to a hospital where he was declared brought dead, they said.
A case under sections 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence or giving false information to screen offender) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered and an investigation taken up, a senior police officer said.(PTI)
Aircraft maintenance technicians at IndiGo and Go First continue to remain on sick leave in protest against their low salaries, aviation regulator DGCA on Wednesday said, adding it hopes the situation will improve soon.
Flight operations of these airlines have remained normal during the period, it said.
"We are closely monitoring the situation. As of now operations are normal. Hopefully, it will be resolved shortly," the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said in a statement.(PTI)

Delhi government schools are helping students prepare for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) by conducting free preparatory classes for aspirants.
Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who interacted with students at Kautilya Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, Chirag Enclave, on Monday, said, “This year, for the first time, the CUET is being conducted for admissions in central universities of India. Many Delhi government school students wanted to prepare for the entrance but were not in a situation to afford high coaching fees. For them, the Kejriwal government, under a unique initiative, has ensured that all aspiring students are provided sufficient support at the school level itself so they do not consider giving up their dreams because of financial reasons.” Read more

Two Delhi Police head constables were injured while arresting a man who was chasing another person with a shaving razor in the Capital’s Dwarka area Tuesday, said officials.
They said that head constables Jitender and Mukesh were patrolling when they spotted the accused, identified as S K Masaraf, 39, a resident of the Pappan Kalan J J Colony, running behind another man with a razor blade to allegedly assault him. Read more
Delhi has seen less than 2,000 active cases of Covid-19 or those with current infection for two days in a row, according to the daily health bulletin released by the government. There were 1,960 active cases recorded on Tuesday, of whom 103 were hospitalised.
The low number of active cases, and daily incidence, also coincide with fewer tests being conducted. There were 400 new Covid-19 cases recorded with 13,700 tests on Tuesday and 280 new infections with 6,645 tests, as per the data. Fewer tests are being conducted during the current surge, with most people relying on home-based Covid-19 kits to test themselves. Read more
Delhi Metro has recovered around 76 per cent of pre-Covid ridership and hopes to achieve 100 per cent ridership in the coming months, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) MD Vikas Kumar said, adding that the ridership has improved since last week after schools and colleges reopened.
“It is not only Delhi Metro. Covid pandemic has impacted Metro services globally and almost all the Metro networks across the world still have a 20 per cent gap in bringing back ridership as compared to the pre-Covid period,” Kumar said during his first interaction with the media. “So, only around 80 per cent of ridership is back…but we are hopeful that things are getting normal so commuters will return to the Metro,” he added. The body of an unidentified woman with injuries on her body was found near a posh residential apartment complex in Greater Noida Tuesday, said the police.
The woman’s body was found lying in a service lane opposite AWHO Apartments in Sector Chi-IV, according to the police. Passersby in the area found her and notified the Noida police who reached the spot, they added. Read more
