The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,29,96,427, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.20 per cent.
The active cases comprise 0.30 per cent of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.50 per cent.
The country's total tally of Covid-19 cases rose to 4,36,52,944 and the death toll climbed to 5,25,474 with 20 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated.

Biden administration may offer second coronavirus boosters to all adults
The Biden administration is considering whether to expand second coronavirus booster shots to adults under 50 in an effort to counter the latest, highly contagious variant, which has driven up hospitalization rates and deepened worries about waning immunity among those vaccinated or boosted at least six or so months ago.Expanding eligibility for a fourth dose of vaccine to younger adults would require regulatory approval; more discussions with officials from the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are expected in the coming days, according to people familiar with the situation.
Unassigned strain: Need to take guard, say docs
Genome sequencing of 560 Covid positive samples from the state has identified 11 Omicron sublineages, of which 54% are BA. 2 and 28% BA. 2. 38, INSACOG data has revealed. In Kolkata, 40% of the samples were classified as BA. 2, the most common Omicron sublineage that is known to cause a mild disease, but a significantly high 31. 4% had the “unassigned” strain. In North and South 24 Parganas, the unassigned variant was found in 32. 6% and 42% of the samples respectively.
'Fitter Omicron BA.2 versions may be in circulation’
It is highly possible that a few “fitter” or more transmissible sub-lineages of BA. 2 may be currently circulating in India, scientists from the INSACOG lab network told TOIon Monday. “Three new second-generation variants—BA. 2. 74, BA. 2. 75 and BA. 2. 76—of Omicron’s BA. 2 variant were identified earlier this month and one—BA. 2. 38—last month. But it’s likely that a few more such variants, from the same BA. 2 family, are circulating in the country,” said asenior official from the department of biotechnology.
The fifth round of sentinel surveillance for Covid-19 in Bengal — conducted between July 6 and 8 — has thrown up a positivity rate of more than 10% in 11 districts, including Kolkata. This is a significant rise since no district had a positivity rate of more than 3% during the previous round of surveillance.
A significant percentage of Covid samples collected from across Bengal for genome sequencing till June 27 does not match any of the known variants, according to data released by INSACOG (Indian SARSCov 2 Genomics Consortium), a joint initiative of the Union health ministry and the department of biotechnology with Council for Industrial & Scientific Research and Indian Council of Medical Research . While Omicron variants were detected in 64% of the samples, 36% had an “unassigned” strain that could be an altogether new variant that has not yet been identified, said experts.
Daily detection of Covid-19 cases dropped significantly in the state and the city on Monday due to fewer tests carried out over the weekend.Maharashtra reported 1,189 new cases of coronavirus on Monday, the lowest detected in 35 days (since June 6). Mumbai also reported its lowest daily detection in 48 days. The city on Monday reported 235 new cases, its lowest tally since May 24 (218 cases). State officials have said that irrespective of fewer tests leading to fewer detections on Monday, the current surge appears to be receding.
The US announced on Monday that it has secured 3.2 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine by Novavax, which has partnered with the Serum Institute of India, with India's envoy in the US describing it as Indo-US "synergies in healthcare at work."
West Bengal's Covid-19 positivity rate rose to 21.29 per cent on Monday, around four per cent more than that on the previous day, the health department said in a bulletin. It said that the state registered 1,915 fresh coronavirus cases pushing the tally to 20,53,626.
