Coimbatore: The Mettupalayam police on Saturday booked a 68-year-old man for assaulting his maid on a suspicion that she stole gold ornaments from his house.
A police officer identified the accused as V Rajendran, a resident of Kurumbanur near Mettupalayam.
He said the coming of age ceremony (manjal neerattu vizha) of Rajendran’s granddaughter was held recently. “After the function, he kept gold ornaments weighing 20 sovereigns in a safe in his house. The gold went missing on Thursday.”
Rajendran suspected his maid R Alagammal, 64, who has been working at his house for the past two months, would have taken away the ornaments. “He restrained her and assaulted her on Thursday noon. The woman suffered injuries and was admitted to the government hospital at Mettupalayam,” the officer said.
On Saturday, Alagammal lodged a complaint with the Mettupalayam police, who registered a case against Rajendran under sections 294(b) (using obscene words), 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement) and 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code. tnn
