Margao: Overflowing chambers of the underground sewerage network at Colomorod, Navelim, have been causing hardships to the locals.
Recently, officials of the sewerage department inspected the various locations and took stock of the situation.
Savio Coutinho of the Shadow Council for Margao demanded that the department act on top priority to find a permanent solution to the overflowing sewage chambers.
“The hardship due to the overflowing sewage is not limited to foul stench alone, but poses a serious problem to many a passerby, who gets splashed with sewage by the moving vehicles. Even school-going children are forced to wade through the filthy water. Sewage eventually flows into the low-lying areas which turn into breeding grounds for mosquitoes that could lead to vector-borne diseases,” Coutinho said.
He accused the sewerage department’s contractors of executing shoddy and substandard works and said that all the flaws pointed out by the Shadow Council during various stages of the work were ignored.
“While on one hand the Margao Municipal Council slaps Rs 5,000 fine on residential and commercial premises for letting sewage flow into the drains, on the other, sewage of the connected premises overflows through the manholes,” Coutinho said, pointing to the irony of the situation.
