Alt News co-founder Mohammad Zubair was remanded to 14-day judicial custody by Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri court. He has been remanded to custody on charges of promoting enmity between groups which was filed last year.
Zubair, who is currently lodged at Sitapur district jail, appeared before the local court in Lakhimpur Kheri through video conference.
Reportedly, the case in Lakhimpur Kheri was filed in September last year on a court directive.
According to police, a person claiming to be a journalist with local television channel, Ashish Kumar Katiyar, got the case filed on September 18 last year against Zubair and Twitter at Mohammadi police station in Lakhimpur Kheri.
Katiyar claimed Zubair had circulated false news on content broadcasted by his channel disturbing communal harmony. He later moved to court and sought directions for FIR registration since the police did not entertain his request; subsequently, a case was filed under section 153A of the Indian Penal Code.
