Graphic by Angshuman Maity)With a score of 99.998 percentile, Nagpur resident Adwai Krishna has topped Maharashtra in the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) – Main, session 1, result for which was declared on Monday. While Jahnabi Roy from Mumbai became the state topper among girls with 99.992 percentile, Ved Danait from Vile Parle became the city topper with 99.995 percentile.
Krishna was preparing for his second attempt at JEE, session 2 to be held in a few days when he came to know about his results. “But now I am having second thoughts if I should appear for this attempt. This score is good enough to qualify for JEE-Advanced. And my aim is to get admission in IIT Bombay for Computer Science,” said Adwai, a student of J N International School, who went to Allen Career Institute in Nagpur for JEE Coaching.
Engineering was a natural career choice for Krishna whose father, Amit Kumar Srivastava, is an electrical engineer working with central government. Not one to shy away from hard work, Krishna would attend five hours of classes daily followed by seven hours of self-study after school. The pandemic-induced closure of academic institutions came as a roadblock but Krishna said he learnt to overcome it. “It was difficult at first to adjust to the new mode. But soon I was comfortable with the online mode of studying,” he says.
For Roy, however, the online mode came as a godsend as it meant not having to spend time in the long commute from her Mira Road home to her school in Kandivali. A student of Ryan International School, Jahnabi took JEE coaching from multiple places but focused more on self-study. Considering that both her parents are from engineering background, opting to become an engineer was not a difficult decision for her. Like Krishna, she aspires to join IIT Bombay for Computer Science and plans to put all her focus into JEE-Advanced preparation now.

“I can work more on my concepts and their applications etc. as the JEE-Advanced demands more thorough understanding of the subjects, unlike JEE-Main, which is more about speed and theoretical knowledge,” says the 17-year-old who practises Karate in her spare time. “It helps me get refreshed,” add Roy, who is also a trained Kathak dancer and Hindustani Classical music singer.
City topper Danait too belongs to a musical family where he loves to play tabla while his father enjoys playing flute. By joining an IIT, he would be following in the footsteps of his father Mayur Danait, who is an IIT Bombay alumnus from 1994 batch. “Along with tabla, I love to play chess during my free time. But in the past two years, I have hardly had time to indulge in these activities. The online studies, however, worked in my favour as I saved a lot of time, which was used efficiently,” says the student of PACE integrated junior college where he also received JEE coaching. Danait’s mother Vinita is a CA. Even as he is confident of qualifying for JEE-Advanced, Danait plans to appear for the second session of JEE-Main as he wants to write the national-level exam for “experience”.
The second session will be held between July 21 and 30.
This year, a total of 8,72,432 candidates registered for the JEE Main session 1 of which 7,69,589 appeared for the exam. As many as 14 students have secured perfect scores, including four from Telangana, three from Andhra Pradesh and one each from Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Assam, Jharkhand, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.
