Mumbai: One month after zero Covid deaths in the state, there was another such day on Sunday.

The last time there were zero Covid deaths in the state was June 10. However, 2,591 new cases were registered across the state in the last 24 hours, pushing its tally to 80,04,024 cases so far, while the death toll stands at 1,47,976.

In Mumbai, there were 399 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The total death count in the city is 19,624 so far while the total number of cases so far is 11,18,795.

Dr Avinash Supe, in charge, Covid-19 death committee, said though deaths were zero there was a need for close vigilance of patients with comorbidities.

Deaths over the last month indicated that fatalities were climbing even as cases were gradually plateauing, he felt.

“We have observed this previously, where the death rate climbs 2-3 weeks after a surge in cases. But there is nothing to worry about, as the infection rate is still low. We are witnessing deaths among elderly people with comorbidities,” he said.

“It is a general pattern that we witness during any surge. Cities like Mumbai and Pune record the highest number of cases, which gradually spread to the neighbouring areas due to the proximity and population movement. But as the infection rate is mild, we haven’t witnessed any sudden spike like during the third wave,” said Dr Pradip Awate, the state surveillance officer.
