National Human Rights Commission seeks report on death during Rath Yatra in Bhubaneswar

BHUBANESWAR: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action taken report from the energy department secretary, superintendent of police and Balasore collector over the electrocution of a man during Rath Yatra celebrations in the district on July 1.
Taking cognizance of a petition, filed by rights activist and lawyer Radhakanta Tripathy, the NHRC passed the order on July 5.
In his petition, Tripathy said one Anil Kumar Sahu of Agarada village died due to electrocution during the festivities, organised at Gudikhala Mutt.
He added that the accident happened when the residents of Khudial village were pulling a chariot. A metallic part of the chariot came in contact with an 11-KV wire, leaving Sahu dead and eight others injured.
Tripathy alleged that the accident happened due to the negligenceand failure of the energy department officials and the district administration.
