PANAJI: A significant reduction in precipitation during the past 24 hours till Saturday morning provided some relief, as India meteorological department (IMD), Panaji recorded average rain of 88.7mm — just over 50% less than the torrential rainfall of 169.7mm, recorded on Friday morning.
Over the weekend, the seasonal total jumped to 1583.5mm (62.3 inches) — and the surplus to 29% — while a total of 1225.2mm (48.2 inches) is considered normal at this stage. In the four-month or 122-day season, 53% of the seasonal rainfall has been logged in 39 days or less than one and half month.
The decrease in rainfall activity saw only two centres record very heavy rainfall, and ten of 11 other centres received heavy rainfall.

IMD, Panaji had issued a red alert for Friday.
The rejuvenation of monsoon has been significant, as it had been delayed by five days and the first 20 days witnessed fluctuations.
“The monsoon current strengthened during last week of June, as systems started forming over eastern coast. During the last 39 days, we can see that the first 20 days yielded a state average rainfall of 302mm and the second set of 19 days 1281mm,” Rahul M, scientist, IMD, Panaji said.
In a revised forecast, IMD, Panaji has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall for five more days till Wednesday, July 13. “With active monsoon conditions prevailing and possible increase in rainfall again from July 12, the figures of this month are likely to improve further,” the IMD scientist said.
