Cybercriminals target mayor

Coimbatore: City mayor Kalpana Anandakumar on Friday lodged a police complaint after unidentified people created two fake WhatsApp accounts using her name and photographs. The fraudsters have sent messages from the accounts to a few officials and councillors, seeking Amazon gift cards.
Sources with the city corporation said the mayor came to know about the fake profiles on Friday. Immediately, she alerted families, friends and her colleagues.
The fake accounts were created using mobile numbers 9453578966 and 9719107253. “It seems fraudsters from other states were behind the profiles. A written complaint has been submitted to the police commissioner office,” said an official.
Last month, a fake WhatsApp account was created using collector G S Sameeran’s name and photo. Fraudsters, similarly, sought Amazon gift cards from the people. A police complaint was lodged then too.
