MANGALURU/ UDUPI: Like in the past three days, rainfall was sporadic, but heavy to moderate, all along the coast on Sunday affected normal life and the IMD has extended the red alert forecast till Wednesday.
The DK district administration declared a holiday declared on Monday to all the Anganwadi centers, primary and high schools, including all private, aided and government. PU colleges and degree colleges and other professional colleges will remain open
Subrahmanya taluk, especially Kukke Subrahmanya received heavy rains. The bathing ghat at Kukke remained submerged for the fifth day on Sunday. Traffic was affected as the submersible Halla bridge on the Subrahmanya Kadaba state highway went underwater on Saturday night. In Mangaluru taluk, the NH is ridden with potholes from Panambur till BC Road, especially the Kulur old bridge which is creating traffic gridlocks every day.

The Nethravathi river at Bantwal breached the danger level of 8.5 mts. The low-lying areas of Panemangalore, Guddeyangady, Aladka, Bogodi, Nandavara, Goodinabali, Bantwal, Kelaginapete, Baddakatte, navoor, Maindala, Sarapady and Ajilamogaru were inundated. Many residents have been asked to move to safer places on Saturday itself. The Nethravathi river at Uppinangady was at 29.70 mts, with the danger level being 31.5 mts. The Gundya river was at 4.9 mts with danger level being 5 mts.
In Udupi, the loss on Saturday and Sunday was estimated at about Rs 6.5 lakh. This includes partial damage to five houses in Brahmavar (Rs 85000); three houses in Udupi (Rs 2 lakh); two houses in Karkala (Rs 75000); five houses and a cow shed in Byndoor (Rs 1.70 lakh); two houses and a cow shed in Kundapur (Rs 1.25 lakh) and total damage to three classrooms of the Ammanavara Toppu, Uppunda Village, Byndoor and the loss was estimated at Rs 2.50 lakh.
A bulletin issued by IMD at 1 pm on Sunday stated that extremely heavy rainfall amounts (in mm): Subramanya (Dakshina Kannada dt) 210. Very heavy rainfall amounts (in mm): Mulki (Dakshina Kannada dt) 200; Castle Rock (Uttara Kannada dt) 190; Moodbidri, Belthangady (both Dakshina Kannada dt) 180 each; Dharmasthala (Dakshina Kannada dt) 170; Mani (Dakshina Kannada dt) 160; Karkala (Udupi dt), Sullia (Dakshina Kannada dt), 130; Mangaluru Airport, Puttur (Dakshina Kannada dt), 120 each. Heavy rainfall amounts (in mm): Udupi, Kollur (Udupi dt), Panambur (Dakshina Kannada dt), 110 each; Siddapur (Uttara Kannada dt), Siddapura (Udupi dt), Mangaluru (Dakshina Kannada dt) 100 each.
All taluks of DK District received excess rainfall by 100% to 200% than the average rainfall recorded for the day. Dakshina Kannada district received an average rainfall of 143mm, Udupi received 110mm and Uttara Kannada district received 50mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.
In the last 24 hours, six taluks in DK received more than 80mm of rainfall. They are: Belthangady (88mm), Sullia (80mm), Moodbidri (90mm), Kadaba (102mm), Puttur (80mm), Bantwal (83mm) and Mangaluru taluk received 64mm of rainfall. In Udupi six taluks got rainfall in excess of 100mm. They are: Karkala, Udupi, Byndoor, Brahmavar, Hebri and Kaup. Kundapur and Brahamvar received more than 79mm of rainfall.
