As the Eknath Shinde government decided to relocate the Metro car shed back to Aarey Colony in Goregaon the Save Aarey campaign has been reignited. Protestors have gathered on the streets of Aarey Colony demanding that the government saves the city's lungs Aarey Colony and move the Metro car shed out of Aarey.
The protestors at the site were seen holding placards of 'Save Aarey' and were heard raising slogans against the Shinde government that overturned the decision of the Thackeray government.
Even Shiv Sena leader, Aaditya Thackeray was present at the protest site. This is a fight for Mumbai, a fight for life. We fought for forest&to protect our tribals. In a tweet, he said, "Aarey is a unique forest within our city. Uddhav Thackeray ji declared 808 acres of Aarey as Forest and the car shed must move out. Our human greed and lack of compassion cannot be allowed to destroy biodiversity in our city."
The Thackeray government had shifted the site to Kanjurmarg, but it got embroiled in a legal dispute. They had also declared Aarey Colony as a reserved forest area.
The forest has some five lakh trees, and also has a couple of rivers and some lakes flowing through it, they say.
