BERHAMPUR: The 20-year-old male elephant, which was found dead in Ganjam district’s Kanduribadi forest area under Ghumusar North forest division’s Muzagad range on Thursday evening, had died of gunshot, officials said on Saturday.
After killing the animal, poachers had removed its tusks. “Though the autopsy report is yet to be received, we think that the
jumbo died of gunshot. Two gunshot injuries have been detected in its body,” said P K Mishra, regional chief conservator of forest, Berhampur.
Forest and environment minister Pradip Kumar Amat on Saturday talked to local officials through video conference about the elephant’s death and asked them to take measures to protect other jumbos in the area.
