Jalandhar: The activists of hardliner parties Dal Khalsa and Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) had arguments with the cops here on Saturday over put up posters of slain miliants commander Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and terror convict Jagtar Singh Hawara on more public buses despite an official ;police directive to take those off.
The Sikh activists gathered at Guru Nanak Mission Chowk, where police tried to block them. The marchers asked to meet Punjab Roadways general manager. It led to a heavy deployment of police outside the bus stand, so the march coming to the spot was directed to the GM’s office. Amid this standoff, the Sikh activists rushed to stick posters in a couple of buses passing by. One of them succeeded but the cops removed that poster quickly.
The officials later got Punjab Roadways GM Gurinder Singh to talk to the protesters led by Dal Khalsa spokesman Paramjit Singh Mand, who said Bhindranwale and Hawara were their “respected figures”. Mand gave the government till Wednesday to withdraw its directive. Another protest leader, Paramjit Singh Tanda, said Saturday’s stir was symbolic, the next will be wider. tnn
