BHUBANESWAR: The higher education department is planning to create a separate cadre for principals of government degree colleges. Eligible college
teachers will be included in the principal cadre. They will work as regular principals of government degree colleges.
Sources said the department has started a process to create this cadre. After the chief minister’s office gives its approval to this proposal, a separate cadre for principals will be created like other government cadres.
Presently, the department chooses the senior-most teacher to become the principal of his/her college. During selection, the department ensures that the teacher’s retirement date doesn’t fall within 18 months of assuming charge as principal. “After creation of this cadre, teachers who are selected as principals will get a salary hike. They will not be engaged in teaching. They can focus on administrative, development and other work for the betterment of the college,” said an official.
The department has prepared an action taken report on the matters raised by standing committee. In the compliance section of the report, the department on Friday said, “Steps are being taken for posting of principal in government colleges.”
