GUWAHATI: A court here has rejected the final report of the Assam Police on an FIR lodged by the father of a 17-year-old student who was killed in police firing during the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests on December 12, 2019 in the city.
The police submitted the final report to the court on March 3 last year, but victim Sam’s father Biju Stafford in December raised objections following which Siddharth Brook, judicial magistrate first class in the Kamrup (Metro), in a recent order, registered the case as a complaint case and named additional DGP (law & order) GP Singh as a respondent.
Stafford’s contention was that one of the armed police personnel shot his son dead by firing at his head from point blank range and the subsequent investigation conducted by the police was not bonafide.
The investigating officer stated in the final report that tear gas and rubber bullets were used in order to disperse the unruly mob that day and later the police tried to control the mob by resorting to blank firing in which Sam sustained injuries and died on the spot.
