Mysuru: Urban development minister BA Basavaraju on Friday reiterated the state government’s stand on demolition of the iconic Devaraja Market and said it’ll go ahead with its plan and build a market there.
Elected representatives and officials will discuss it with the erstwhile royal family which has opposed the demolition.
Notwithstanding opposition from conservationists and activists to demolish the century-old structure, the minister said the cabinet has decided to raze the structure. Chief minister Basavaraj Bommai has approved the reconstruction plan, he added.
The issue has been hanging fire for a decade as conservationists oppose demolition while elected representatives argue that it has outlived its utility.
Spread over half an acre in the central business district, it is treated as a prime piece of realty, which has angered conservationists. Another landmark, Lansdowne Building, is also proposed to be demolished.
