The India Meteorological Department (IMD), on July 8, scaled down the red alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar districts to orange. However the red alert remains unchanged for Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg in the coastal Konkan region.

After four days of downpour, the city got respite from heavy showers on July 8. The city and neighbouring towns on Friday saw sporadic rains and witnessed cloudy skies.

A civic official said that in the 24-hour period that ended on Friday, 8 am, Mumbai and the eastern and western suburbs recorded an average rainfall of 28.08 mm, 32.64 mm and 51.96 mm.

However, the agency said that there was a possibility of occasional strong winds reaching 40-50 kmph.

Due to the red alert, five teams of the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) were deployed in the metropolis and the civic body was also geared up to face any eventuality.
