GUWAHATI: A lower court in Assam’s Chirang on Friday sent two persons behind bars for life for killing a home guard constable last year in the district. While one accused was killed in police firing while trying to allegedly flee police custody during investigation, the fourth accused is absconding. The convicted are Safiur Rahman and Lal Bhanu Bibi. The court has also slapped them with a fine of Rs 20,000 each failing to pay which they have to serve two months more in jail.
Rahman, out of personal enmity, had put out a contract of Rs 1.5 lakh to hitman Abdul Khaleque and another person Ayub Ali, a first-time offender, to kill home guard Wahed Ali aka Iyad Ali, who was posted at Bijni police station. They stabbed the home guard to death on July 6 evening at Bhandara and threw away the weapon in a nearby jungle. Khaleque was shot dead by police on July 7 last year while he was allegedly trying to flee from custody. According to the police, he was taken to the incident spot where he had thrown the murder weapon and suddenly, he had snatched the service pistol of the Bijni sub-divisional police officer and fled towards the jungle. The fourth accused, Ayub Ali, is still absconding.
