The coastal Karnataka districts of Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada have been put on red alert following heavy rainfall and high tides in the region.
The downpour has caused heavy damage to infrastructure and houses in several districts. Reports of landslides have also emerged in some regions along the coast.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday said the heavy rainfall and winds are occurring due to a cyclonic circulation over the northwest and adjoining the west-central Bay of Bengal off the south Odisha-north and Andhra Pradesh coasts.
Flood warnings have been sounded in some northern districts of Karnataka amid heavy downpours in neighbouring Maharashtra.
Karnataka Water Resources Minister Govind Karjol informed that owing to heavy rains in Maharashtra, water discharge by the neighbouring state into the Krishna river and its tributaries has also risen.
