COIMBATORE: Police aim to bring the Coimbatore city under a CCTV blanket by covering every 50 metres of public spaces with a camera, police commissioner V Balakrishnan said on Saturday.
Inaugurating 32 CCTV cameras installed at Nandha Nagar, which falls under the Singanallur police station limits, by Geniies IT and Services Private Limited, the commissioner appreciated the public for setting up cameras. The CCTC cameras cover Rajaganapathy Nagar, Lakshmanan Nagar, KPR Layout, Nandha Road, Thirukumaran Nagar, SNT Layout and a few more areas.
The commissioner said CCTV cameras aid in better surveillance and prevention and detection of crimes. He requested residential welfare associations, traders’ associations and industrial associations to set up more CCTV cameras in places around their homes and workplaces.
On complaints of transgender people harassing the public, Balakrishnan said police officials conducted a meeting with the transmen and transwomen recently and advised them not to disturb the public. “If transgenders were found violating the law, they would be booked and stringent action would be taken. Six transgenders approached the home guard to make them part of the group. Steps are taken include them in home guard.”
Deputy commissioner of police (south) N Silambarasan, assistant commissioner of police M G Arun, Singanallur inspector P Arun and managing director of Geniies IT and Services Private Limited Devaraj Palanisamy participated at the event.
