VADODARA: Buzzing with kids all day, the government school in Dena village, about 10km from the city, got an unexpected visitor early on Thursday morning. A six-foot-long crocodile crawled into the primary school premises at about 2.30am. The reptile was luckily spotted and rescued just hours before the school children walked in to attend their classes.
“The reptile must have ventured out of the Vishwamitri that is located just half kilometre away from the school. It entered the school compound and began crawling around on the ground where the students play during the day time,” said Hemant Vadhwana, wildlife activist. Some stray dogs spotted the crocodile and started barking, following which some curious locals reached the school. They immediately called the forest department and Vadhwana who rushed to the spot. “It took us some time to rescue the crocodile as it was dark and the reptile was a bit aggressive. It has been handed over to the forest department,” Vadhwana told TOI.
Sajid Sheikh, a local, said that had the crocodile entered the school premises in the morning, it would have been a scary situation. Dena village residents said that the giant reptiles often venture out of the Vishwamitri and are seen in the fields nearby.
“During monsoons, many crocodiles move out of the river as the water level swells,” Vadhwana said.
