LUCKNOW: Sitapur police got a six-day custody remand of Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair on Thursday for questioning him in connection with an FIR lodged in the district. He had been booked on May 27 for allegedly hurting religious sentiments and police have filed a charge sheet in the case.
Zubair was produced before the Sitapur district court on Thursday for the second time in the past three days. On July 4, he was produced before the same court which had granted 14 days' judicial custody but allowed him to stay at the Tihar jail, where he had already been lodged for a case filed in Delhi on June 27.
He was produced before the Sitapur court on Thursday after the local police moved another application on Wednesday, seeking his police custody remand for interrogation in connection with the FIR pending against him for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through his tweet on Mahant Bajrang Muni, Yati Narsinghanand Saraswati and Swami Anand Swaroop.
Sitapur police circle officer, city, Piyush Kumar Singh, told TOI that Zubair's remand was sought for questioning and collecting evidence. "As per the court order, the remand period will start from Friday 10 am," he said. He would remain in the custody of Sitapur police for the next six days.
Police sources also said that Zubair would be taken to Bangalore for recovery of mobile and laptop from his residence.
