Former Australian skipper Steve Smith slammed his first international century since 2021 as the visitors took command on Day 1 of the second Test at Galle on Friday.

Smith went past Indiaโ€™s Virat Kohli (27) in the number of Test tons and joined former England skipper Joe Root (28).

Smith scored a boundary to reach his ton and it came in 194 deliveries. This was his first ton in the last 16 innings.

Earlier, Australia lost both openers before lunch on Day 1.

Seamer Kasun Rajitha provided the early breakthrough for Sri Lanka when he dismissed David Warner for 5. Then, Ramesh Mendis broke a 55-run stand between the Queensland state pair of Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne when Khawaja went on the back foot to defend but was beaten when the ball hit the top of his off-stump.

Fans lauded Smith for his fighting century.
