The Nashik Rural police, probing the murder of the Afghan national who was shot dead in Yeola on Tuesday, have obtained his bank records to further probe the possible motive behind his murder.

The victim, Khwaja Ahmed Zarif Chishti (35), was shot dead in the MIDC area in Yeola on Tuesday evening. His driver and three others who were with him at the time and subsequently went on the run, are the chief suspects in the murder.

According to police officials, preliminary inquiries have revealed that he would get his friends to buy property for him, as he was forbidden from owning any property in India due to his foreigner status. The murder is believed to have been committed over disputes arising from one such transaction.

“We are examining Chishti’s bank records to find out more about these transactions. What we have found out so far is that he would pay money to his friends in exchange for letting him control the properties that were technically in their name. There seems to have been a dispute over the compensation to be paid for the latest property that he wanted to control, which could have led to the murder,” an officer with the Nashik Rural police said.

Meanwhile, the police on Wednesday night detained one of the four suspects who were with Chishti when he was shot. Officials said that he is still being questioned and that no arrests have been made in the case as yet.
