After several incidents of houses and buildings collapsing during this monsoon season, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday said that it will evict the residents staying in dilapidated buildings in Mumbai with the help of the city police.

A high-level meeting was conducted on Friday at BMC headquarters wherein four additional municipal commissioners, Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalka, representatives of MHADA, MMRDA, Coast guards and BEST were present.

In a meeting, it was noticed that despite sending notices, residents are not ready to evacuate the buildings which later leads to fatal incidents. Recently, a ground plus three-storey building collapsed at Kurla where 19 people died and 14 got injured.

Ashwini Bhide, additional municipal commissioner, said that the BMC will expedite the process of evicting these dilapidated structures with the help of the Mumbai Police.

"In the meeting, it has been decided that fresh notices of eviction and pull down will be sent to these buildings where people are living. Following which electricity lines and sewage connections will be disconnected immediately," said a senior official.

"Most of these buildings are being occupied by tenants and often while carrying eviction drives, the owners along with civic officials face resistance from them. Which is why this time we have decided to take help from the police," said the official.

Every year, BMC releases a list of dilapidated structures ahead of the monsoon. Accordingly, there are 332 dilapidated buildings in Mumbai spread across all the 24 municipal wards.

Meanwhile, P Velrasu, additional municipal commissioner (Projects) directed that all the pothole-related complaints should be addressed and filled within 24 hours.
