A 40-year-old man employed with a private company became the latest victim of cyber crooks after he lost more than Rs. 61,000 while paying the registration fee online to apply for a job that did not exist at all. The cyber criminals used the fake version of a reputed employment website operating in India and Middle East, to dupe the aspiring job seeker.
In his statement to the police the complainant said that he received a call from a person claiming to be a representative of the employment firm. The caller tricked the complainant into paying a nominal fee amounting Rs. 10 towards the purported registration fee online, by clicking on a link. After uploading the debit card details, for a transaction of Rs.10 for registration fee, the complainant was shocked to learn that Rs. 4,995 and Rs.15,000 had been debited from his card.
However, the crooks did not stop here and under the garb of initiating a refund of the excess amount siphoned off another Rs.21,248 and Rs.20,236. Realising he was cheated of an amount totalling Rs. 61,479 he immediately lodged a complaint with the Navghar police station, following which a case under the relevant sections of the IPC and Information Technology Act was registered. Further investigations were underway.
