The courage of the boy and the uncle needs to be lauded. It is also heartening that in a city otherwise infamous for apathy, Good Samaritans intervened and put their lives on the line for two strangers. They too need to be felicitated to encourage such human spirit.
Police were alerted about a shooting around 11.40pm on Monday and a team rushed to the incident spot. The victims were taken to Trauma Centre at Civil Lines. Girish, 19, ran a mobile shop in Wazirabad while his uncle, Lal Singh, had a business related to paints at Laxmi Nagar. "Singh regularly came to his nephew’s mobile shop after his business hours. The two then collected cash, costly mobile phones, laptops, etc, from the shop and both left for their home on a motorcycle," a police officer said.
On Monday night too, the duo left around 11pm with the cash and goods. At the entrance of street no.16 in Wazirabad, three bike-borne men blocked their way and tried to snatch their bags. The duo resisted and started to push them away, but one of the criminals opened fire. Girish received a gunshot injury on his left hand, but still hung on to his bags. His uncle threw bricks at the robbers, hitting one of them.
Just then, two men on a bike, who were passing by the stretch, stopped on seeing the scuffle. When they inquired what was happening, the criminals again let off a shot. All the four men then got together and took on the criminals while raising an alarm. They exchanged blows in the melee, but didn't give up. The robbers managed to flee in the dark, but had to leave their bike behind. Passers-by then took the injured youth to the hospital.
Sagar Singh Kalsi, DCP (North), said on Tuesday that an FIR had been registered and several police teams had been formed to arrest the suspects. Footage of CCTV cameras on the stretch is also being analysed for clues to their identity. Sources said that police are close to cracking the case because they received crucial leads on Tuesday evening. The cops appreciated the bravery shown by the four resistors.
