COIMBATORE: Coimbatore police have arrested a right wing functionary 'Athiradi' Saraswathi for releasing a threatening video against Leena Manimekalai who directed a documentary film named 'Kaali'.
The arrested woman Sarasawathi hailed from Chokkampudur near Selvapuram in Coimbatore. She was booked under sections 294 (b) and 506(i) of the Indian Penal Code.
Leena Manimekalai from Toronto in Canada directed Sengadal, an independent film and Maadathy, a folklore drama film. She directed her third film named Kaali, a documentary film. A few days ago, the first look poster was released for Kaali and the controversial poster features a woman dressed as Hindu goddess Kali and smoking. An LGBTQ community’s pride flag is seen in the backdrop. Uttar Pradesh and Delhi Police registered FIRs against Leena Manimekalai.
Meanwhile, Sashti Sena Hindu Makkal Iyakkam founder president Saraswathi released a video on Tuesday and abused Leena Manimekalai in foul language for releasing the first look poster of Kaali. She also threatened her life with dire consequences.
The video went viral on social media on Tuesday evening.
Selvapuram police special sub-inspector Selvakumar received the video and lodged a complaint against Saraswathi. Police registered a case against Saraswathi and arrested her from a women's hostel in Tirupur city on Wednesday morning.
She was brought to Selvapuram police station for further investigation.
