Ludhiana: Five members of the Sewerman Safai Karamchari Sangharsh Committee sat on a hunger strike all Tuesday outside the municipal corporation’s zone A office near Mata Rani Chowk here to ask for regularisation of the contractual sweepers, sewer cleaners, drivers, and peons.
Claiming that these workers had waited long for a regular job despite working diligently, the committee said that on Monday, its members had staged a massive protest at Clock Tower Chowk and blocked traffic. Five new members will continue this chain hunger strike daily. The protesting committee wants all contractual employees to be regularised.
The protesters claimed that after years of waiting, now when some posts were announced even a few candidates had even received the appointment letters from former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi before the assembly elections, things had not changed. They accused the politicians of cheating them, alleging that the previous government used them as a tool to garner votes, while new government was unwilling to look into their grievances. They claimed to have come to protest after a busy fieldwork morning.
