Monsoon, Weather Live Updates Today: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Maharashtra on Wednesday and the next two days, as state capital Mumbai continued to witness heavy downpour for the third consecutive day. Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh will also experience enhanced rainfall during the next few days. As per IMD’s latest weather forecasts, Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra remain on ‘red’ alert (take action) till July 8. Goa, coastal Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are also under ‘orange’ alert today. An ‘orange’ alert has been issued for July 9.

At least seven people were feared dead in separate incidents triggered by heavy rains and flash floods in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district Wednesday, officials told PTI. Over 25 employees working at the Malana power project in the district were also rescued from a building that was damaged by flash floods. At Manikaran in the district, at least four people have been feared washed away and the bridge across Parvati River damaged in flash floods triggered by a cloud burst, they said.

Following the cloud burst at Chojh village in Challal panchayat at around 6 am, four to six people have been missing. A senior State Disaster Management official said that at least five cattle have also been washed away in the flash floods, citing information from the Kullu District Emergency Operations Centre.

Delhi likely to witness light rain, thundershower on Thursday: IMD

Delhi is likely to witness light rain and thundershower on Thursday even as the city's maximum temperature on Wednesday settled at 38.6 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season's average, the weather office said.

The city witnessed a warm and humid morning as the minimum temperature was two notches above normal, even as the weather office predicted light rain during the day.

"There will be a generally cloudy sky with the possibility of light rain and thundershowers at isolated places. The city's maximum and minimum temperatures will hover around 36 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius respectively," an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official told PTI.

The minimum temperature was 29.4 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, the weather office said. The relative humidity at 5.30 pm was 52 per cent, it added. On Tuesday, the maximum temperature in the city had settled at 37.9 degrees Celsius, a notch above normal. (PTI)

In a video doing rounds of the internet, residents of Anuppur are seen sitting on chairs in a big crater on the road, dipping their legs in the muddy water that has accumulated after the rain to “chill”. Maha: 12 hamlets cut off after bridge gets flooded due to heavy rains in Palghar

At least 12 hamlets were cut off after a bridge got flooded due to heavy rains and flooding in Maharashtra's Palghar district, an official said on Wednesday.

According to authorities, Pandartara bridge, which connects Usgaon in Vasai taluka, was inundated and submerged because of incessant rainfall in the region.

At least 12 hamlets in the region are cut off and the situation will remain so for a couple of days till the water recedes, they said. Rain-related incidents were also reported in the neighbouring Thane district.

A 73-year-old woman was injured when a slab of a protection wall on the third floor of ESIS hospital collapsed around 1 pm in Wagle Estate area of Thane city, said Avinash Sawant, the chief of the RDMC said. (PTI)

Maha CM asks authorities to remain on toes during monsoon and ensure no loss of life

With parts of Maharashtra, including capital Mumbai, witnessing heavy rains, state Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday chaired a meeting of the officials, where he asked them to remain alert and take necessary steps to ensure that there is no loss of life during the monsoon.

He also directed the railway authorities and the Mumbai civic administration to appoint a nodal officer for coordination between them and for dissemination of information about water-logging and disruption of suburban train services in Mumbai during the ongoing rainy season.

During the meeting held here for reviewing the status of the overall preparedness for dealing with any eventuality arising out of the monsoon, Shinde asked the railway machinery to remain alert and coordinate with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), a statement from the chief minister's office said. Uttarakhand landslides: Newly elected village head killed in Tehri, debris blocks highway in Rudraprayag

A newly elected village chief was killed while he was on his way to take oath and three people accompanying him were injured following a landslide triggered by heavy rains in Uttarakhand's Tehri district on Wednesday.

Landslides were reported in various others parts, too, which also led to the blockade of the Badrinath highway near Sirobagad in Rudraprayag district, officials said.

The village chief Pratap Singh (50) and the three others -- Arjun Singh (48) and Pushpa Devi (45) and her daughter Nitu (22) -- were travelling on the Algad-Thattyud motor road in Jaunpur block when a boulder fell on their car at around 10 am. They were en route to Thattyud for the ceremony to take oath as the Gram Pradhan of Tator village, the officials in New Tehri said. (PTI)

Heavy rains in parts of Rajasthan as monsoon gains momentum in state

Several parts of Rajasthan received heavy rain since Tuesday as the monsoon slowly gained momentum over the state, a weather department spokesperson said. 

According to the meteorological centre in Jaipur, very heavy rain has been recorded in some parts of Banswara, Dungarpur, Udaipur and Jhalawar districts. Sajjangarh and Banswara both recorded the highest rainfall of 109 mm while Barmer gauged 51.5 mm of rain.

Moderate to heavy rains will continue in parts of Kota, Udaipur and Jodhpur divisions on Wednesday, the weather department said. From July 7 to 10, a spell of rain will start in the northern parts of the state as well, including Bharatpur, Jaipur, Bikaner, and Ajmer divisions. (PTI)

3 injured in Mumbai landslide after heavy rains; flooded roads & traffic snarls continue to plague citizens

Three people were injured after a landslide near a chawl in Mumbai on Wednesday, as the city continued to witness heavy rains for the third day in a row, with no respite to citizens as many low-lying areas were water-logged causing traffic disruptions, officials said. An aggrieved citizen in a tweet said they now need a boat to commute, instead of a car.

A minor boy and two other persons were injured after a portion of a hill crashed on the two-storey Narayan Hadke Chawl (tenement) in Chunabhatti area around 10.30 am, a civic official said. Three rooms in the chawl were damaged due to the landslide. As a precaution, the civic body has evacuated residents from other adjoining rooms in the chawl, he said. (PTI)

At least 25 killed in Pakistan's Balochistan province as monsoon rains cause flash floods

At least 25 people have been killed, including six women from the same family, after seasonal monsoon rains caused flash floods that wreaked havoc in Pakistan's Balochistan province on Wednesday, prompting authorities to declare an emergency in Quetta district. Director-General of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Naseer Ahmad Nasar said all the deaths were due to rain-related incidents in various parts of Balochistan.

“We have also had many incidents of people being injured in the heavy rains,” he said. There are fears that the death toll could go up as several people are still reportedly missing due to flash flooding in remote areas of the Balochistan province, according to the PDMA. Nasar said that more than 300 mud-walled houses were damaged in Quetta district. (PTI)

Karnataka rains: CM directs immediate rescue and relief work

With heavy rains disrupting normal life in coastal areas and Malnad region of Karnataka, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday said rescue works have been taken up on priority and directions have been issued to take up relief work immediately. The rains have caused damages to houses, buildings, electric poles and properties in affected areas, also rivers have swollen due to the downpour, inundating agricultural fields and low lying areas.

"I have held discussions with Deputy Commissioners of rain affected districts. Already rescue works are on and I have directed to take up relief work. Because of heavy and incessant rains houses and properties have got damaged in coastal districts and Kodagu, and the rains have continued," Bommai said. (PTI)

Landslide in Mumbai's Chunabhatti leaves two injured, three houses damaged

A landslide at the Nagoba chowk in Mumbai's Chunabhatti area left two injured and three houses damaged. The injured have been identified as Shivam Sonawane and Prakash Sonawane. The Mumbai police and BMC officials are at the spot and work is underway to clearing out the mud in the area.
