NEW DELHI: Police in Delhi and Lucknow on Tuesday filed FIRs against Madurai-born, Toronto-based filmmaker Leena Manimekalai following complaints that a controversial poster of her new documentary 'Kaali' has hurt religious sentiments. The image on the poster shows a woman kitted out as goddess Kali smoking a cigarette and waving a gay pride flag.
The FIR registered at Lucknow's Hazratganj police station also named the film's editor Shrawan Onachan and producer Asha Associates.
The cyber cell of Delhi police have sought details of the verified Twitter handle from which the post was made and will send out summons for questioning the person(s) concerned in the coming days, sources said. Manimekalai had shared the poster on social media platforms on June 2. In her tweet, she said the poster was released at the Canada Film Festival.
